Zimbabwe announces ODI squad for upcoming SL series

Brendan Taylor is set to make his return to the 50-over format for the first time since September 2021, as Zimbabwe named a 16-member squad for the two-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, scheduled for August 29 and 31 at the Harare Sports Club.

Taylor’s comeback bolsters the batting unit, while pacer Richard Ngarava returns from injury to strengthen the bowling attack alongside Blessing Muzarabani. The squad also features four players who were not part of the recent Ireland ODI series — Clive Madande, Tony Munyonga, Brad Evans, and uncapped seamer Ernest Masuku.

Zimbabwe’s ODI squad: Craig Ervine (Captain), Brian Bennett, Johnathan Campbell, Ben Curran, Brad Evans, Trevor Gwandu, Wessly Madhevere, Clive Madande, Ernest Masuku, Tony Munyonga, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Newman Nyamhuri, Sikandar Raza, Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams.

Convener of Selectors David Mutendera said Taylor’s inclusion would inspire the team, noting: “His experience and quality are invaluable, especially in pressure situations, and his presence will no doubt lift the dressing room. This squad has a good balance of proven match-winners and young players eager to prove themselves.”

Head coach Justin Sammons and captain Craig Ervine both acknowledged the challenge of switching from red-ball cricket to the fast pace of ODIs. Sammons stressed the need for sharpness against a strong Sri Lankan white-ball side, while Ervine highlighted the importance of adapting quickly and using home conditions to their advantage.

Zimbabwe last played an ODI in February, having focused mainly on Tests since then. Following the ODI series, they will face Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series in early September.
