
A 26-year-old man was arrested by Sri Lanka Customs officers at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) yesterday (14th) with a consignment of foreign-manufactured cigarettes worth Rs. 7 million.
The suspect, a resident of Mawathagama, had arrived from Dubai at around 6:15 a.m. and attempted to exit the airport through the “Green Channel” designated for passengers with nothing to declare.
Upon inspection of his three pieces of luggage, customs officers found 40,660 cigarette sticks and 33 packs of chemical substances used to recharge electronic cigarettes.
The suspect had reportedly been working at a restaurant in Dubai for several years.
Sri Lanka Customs is continuing further investigations into the incident.
