More than 1,500 children in Brisbane experienced homelessness over the past year, highlighting growing concerns about the city’s housing crisis.

Data collected by Brisbane Zero shows at least 1,539 children from 984 families spent time without a stable home during the period.

The figures show most affected households were led by women, with relationship breakdowns and domestic violence among the main reason’s families became homeless.

The average age of the head of these households was just 25 years old, while many families also faced health and substance abuse challenges.

Micah Projects Acting Chief Executive Officer Bridget Kinch says the situation is being driven by a lack of affordable housing and limited pathways for people needing support.

Over the past year, more than 2,300 individuals were recorded as experiencing homelessness in Brisbane, including nearly 1,000 people facing homelessness for the first time.

Support organizations say more affordable housing options are urgently needed to help families and children find safe and stable homes.
