Mazenod College in Melbourne’s outer east has taken disciplinary action after several Year 12 students were found to have used artificial intelligence tools during an oral English examination.

School principal Paul Shannon said the incident was thoroughly investigated and the results were reported to the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) in accordance with required procedures.

The students involved were spoken to by school authorities, and their marks for the affected assessment were reduced. The school emphasized that examinations are designed to measure a student’s own understanding and independent thinking, and that AI tools have no place in formal assessments.

The VCAA has warned that the misuse of AI may constitute a breach of academic integrity rules, which require students to submit original work, properly acknowledge sources, and avoid plagiarism or cheating.
