Chinese Ambassador Xiao Qian hosted a farewell reception at the Chinese Embassy in Canberra as he prepares to end his four-and-a-half-year diplomatic posting in Australia.

The event drew diplomats and senior officials, although several high-profile guests were absent due to prior commitments.

Russian Ambassador Mikhail Petrakov attended, while representatives from Japan and the United States were not present.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong is also expected to make a personal farewell call to Ambassador Xiao, a gesture seen as recognition of his role in Australia–China relations.

China’s next ambassador Liu Jinsong is expected to will arrival in Canberra expected in September.

His departure comes as Australia and China continue to navigate a complex but improving bilateral relationship.
