The boss of the world’s largest condom manufacturer, Karex, has warned that prices may rise by up to 30% or more if the ongoing Iran conflict continues to disrupt the supply of key raw materials.
Chief Executive Goh Miah Kiat said production costs have increased significantly since the conflict began, putting pressure on the company’s global operations.
Karex, based in Malaysia, produces over five billion condoms annually and supplies major brands such as Durex and Trojan, as well as public health systems including the UK’s NHS.
The company depends on oil-based raw materials, including ammonia used in latex preservation and silicone-based lubricants, both of which have been affected by global supply disruptions.
The conflict has also impacted global energy routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of the world’s oil and gas shipments normally pass.
Rising shipping costs and delays have further strained supply chains, contributing to increased demand and shortages in the market.
Goh noted that condom demand has risen by around 30% this year, as economic uncertainty often leads to higher usage.
He also pointed out that global disruptions are affecting multiple industries, including aviation, agriculture, and manufacturing, with rising prices for air tickets, fertilisers, helium, and bottled water.
International agencies have warned that continued instability could push up food prices, including sugar, dairy, and fruit, due to higher transport costs.
Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over peace talks between the United States and Iran, with discussions on extending a ceasefire still ongoing.
