World bank and UN StAR initiative to help SL recover crime-linked foreign assets

Senior officials from the World Bank and the UN’s Stolen Asset Recovery (StAR) Initiative have agreed to provide technical and expert assistance to Sri Lanka in recovering foreign-held assets believed to have been acquired through criminal activity.

A special discussion on the matter was held yesterday (02) at the Ministry of Justice and National Integration, chaired by Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara.

The World Bank and the StAR Initiative confirmed their support for several key institutions involved in asset recovery, including the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, the Ministry of Justice and National Integration, the Police Division for the Recovery of Proceeds of Crime, the Attorney General’s Department, the Police Department, and the Financial Intelligence Unit.

The meeting was attended by StAR Initiative Senior Economic Specialist Laura Pop, Justice Ministry Secretary President’s Counsel Ayesha Jinasena, Director General of the Bribery Commission High Court Judge Ranga Dissanayake, World Bank Governance Specialist for Sri Lanka Till Hartmann, StAR Advisors Dmytro Kotlyar and Karen Greenaway, as well as other senior ministry officials.
