International Women’s Day has been celebrated worldwide on March 8 for more than a century, recognising the contributions and achievements of women in economic, political, social and cultural spheres. In Sri Lanka, women play a distinctive and vital role across these sectors, and their rights, freedoms and security must be recognised and protected beyond a single day of commemoration.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake noted that women, who make up about 52 percent of the country’s population, contribute significantly to the national economy. In addition to their unpaid role as homemakers, women play key roles in the garment industry, plantation sector, foreign employment and in vital services such as health and education. He expressed gratitude for the dedication and resilience shown by women, which contributed to many of the country’s economic achievements in 2025.
The government, he said, is implementing policies aimed at ensuring gender equality and enabling women to participate more actively and productively in the economic process. Structural reforms are also being prioritised to protect women’s rights and address violence and discrimination faced by women in homes, workplaces, public spaces and political arenas.
Highlighting progress in political representation, the President noted that the current Parliament includes the highest number of female Members of Parliament in Sri Lanka’s history. For the first time, a female MP representing the Malayagam community has also been elected, marking an important milestone.
He stressed the importance of building a strong and empowered generation of women who can contribute to the country’s ongoing economic, political and social transformation. Expanding women’s entrepreneurship within a digital and green economy, and nurturing women entrepreneurs capable of adapting to future economic changes, remains a key priority of the government.
The President also welcomed the theme of this year’s celebration, “In a Thriving Nation – She Leads with Determination,” which highlights the strength and dignity of Sri Lankan women.
As the country works to overcome challenges and build a progressive future, President Dissanayake extended his wishes for a meaningful International Women’s Day and invited women across the nation to join as partners and leaders in shaping Sri Lanka’s future.
