
A local woman from Andiambalama was apprehended by Sri Lanka Customs at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while attempting to smuggle foreign cigarettes valued at over Rs. 4.1 million into the country.
The 55-year-old passenger, who had arrived from Dubai on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 226, was stopped at the Arrival Terminal while trying to pass through the ‘green channel’ without declaring her goods.
Upon inspection, Customs officials discovered 27,400 cigarette sticks packed into 137 cartons concealed within her luggage.
The suspect was fined, and the contraband was confiscated by Customs authorities.
