Wimal Weerawansa and allies launch protest against education reforms

National Freedom Front leader and former minister Wimal Weerawansa, along with civil society representatives and supporters, has launched a continuous Satyagraha protest in front of the Education Ministry at Isurupaya.

The protest calls for the withdrawal of the new education reforms and demands that Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya resign from her position as Education Minister.

Meanwhile, the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court has issued an injunction against Weerawansa and the group of civil organisation representatives involved in the protest, which began on the morning of January 12. The court order instructs the protesters not to obstruct the road near the Ministry and prohibits the use of sound amplification equipment while the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level examinations are underway.
