The wife of former Nepalese Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal has died after being burned alive when her home was set on fire during violent anti-government protests, according to regional media reports.
The unrest has escalated into a full-blown crisis, with protesters torching the Nepalese parliament building and the homes of several political leaders.
The demonstrations, largely led by younger generations, erupted after the government imposed a ban on social media. However, analysts note that widespread frustration over political corruption and the lack of economic opportunities is the deeper cause of the disorder.
