On the remote tropical paradise of Heron Island, off Queensland’s central coast, giant stingrays create a stunning spectacle as they leap out of the water into the sky.
Known for its pristine waters and coral reefs, Heron Island has become a haven for various ray species performing these breathtaking aerial displays.
Scientists remain unsure about the exact reasons behind this behavior, with several theories offering possible explanations.
Associate Professor Ian Tibbetts from the University of Queensland suggests that the most common reason is to dislodge parasites as the rays “fly” meters into the air.
Other possible reasons include courtship rituals, communication, and attempts to escape predators.
Regardless of the purpose, the sight of rays leaping from the ocean floor into the sky remains a captivating marine mystery.
