Who’s more likely to face financial fraud: men or women?

One in ten Australians has been exposed to card fraud, according to a new report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for the 2023–24 financial year.

The ABS survey considered various types of fraud, including credit card fraud, identity theft, and unauthorized access to personal or financial data.

Card fraud rose to 9.9% in 2023–24, affecting approximately 2.1 million Australians.

Scam fraud also saw an increase, rising from 2.5% in 2022–23 to 3.1% in 2023–24.

Around 255,100 Australians were reported to be victims of identity fraud during the same period.

The total financial loss from card fraud reached $2.1 billion.

Of the 675,300 people defrauded in 2023–24, the ABS reported that more women were affected than men.
