The World Health Organization (WHO) expressed regret over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the agency, urging him to reconsider.
Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the U.S. from the WHO, criticizing its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and accusing it of favoritism toward China.
Speaking shortly after his inauguration, Trump claimed the U.S. was unfairly contributing more funding to the WHO compared to China, saying, “World Health ripped us off.”
The United States, as the WHO’s largest donor, provides critical financial support essential for the agency’s global health operations.
WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic emphasized the organization’s role in protecting global health and security, including that of Americans, and expressed hope for renewed dialogue with the U.S.
Jasarevic stated that maintaining the partnership with the U.S. is vital for the health and well-being of millions worldwide.
