The Western Province has recorded the highest number of Chikungunya cases in Sri Lanka this year, according to data released by health authorities.
Of the 16,544 cases reported nationwide since January, 7,611 were from the Western Province.
Within the province, Colombo District reported the highest number of cases at 2,709, followed by Gampaha with 2,453, and Kalutara with 567.
Western Province Governor Hanif Yusuf stated that swift measures are being taken to contain the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.
“We are taking all the measures to contain the spread of Chikungunya,” he said, noting that drone-based fogging operations are being conducted in coordination with the Colombo Regional Health Office.
He also confirmed that 18 anti-Chikungunya programs were carried out in April alone as part of the province’s response efforts.
