The Ministry of Science and Technology has announced the development of a new elephant fence system by engineers at the National Engineering and Development Center, built to international standards.
This innovative fence offers several special features, including the ability to notify the owner via text message if any damage or breach occurs.
A dedicated web page has also been created to monitor and analyze reports related to the fence, ensuring minimal risk of attacks by wild elephants.
As part of a pilot project, the new elephant fence system has been installed at the Weerawila Open Camp.
The project was handed over to the Department of Prisons by Minister of Science and Technology Krishantha Abesekara and Minister of Environment Dhammika Patabendi.
The fence stretches 3.8 kilometers and stands 16 feet tall.
