Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval stated that poor governance was the main reason behind the uprisings that led to regime changes in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka over the past three and a half years.
Delivering the Sardar Patel Memorial Lecture on governance on the occasion of India’s National Unity Day on 31st of October 2025, Doval emphasized that governance plays a crucial role in nation-building and ensuring the security of a nation-state.
He noted that the rise and fall of great empires, monarchies, oligarchies, aristocracies, and democracies throughout history have been determined by the quality of their governance.
Referring to recent political changes in India’s neighbourhood, Doval said that the regime changes in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal through non-constitutional means were “actually cases of poor governance.”
