Rising water levels in the Kelani River Basin have caused severe flooding in Hanwella and several surrounding low-lying areas. The Irrigation Department reports that the water level at the Hanwella gauging station has reached 9.78 metres, nearing the threshold for a major flood.
Irrigation Director General L. S. Sooriyabandara stated that the situation has developed due to the continuous increase in water levels throughout the Kelani River Basin. He added that the gauge reading at Nagalagam Street has risen to 8.35 feet — the highest recorded in recent history.
According to the Director General, water levels are expected to stabilise without further rise.
Meanwhile, the flood dam near the Kelaniya Temple has reached its maximum planned capacity. The Irrigation Department urges residents living near the dam to remain alert to official warnings and assures that immediate notifications will be issued if any risk emerges.
