Water leak reported on iconic Nine Arch bridge in Ella

A water leak has reportedly been observed at the historic Nine Arch Bridge in Ella—also known as the ‘Bridge in the Sky’—on Sri Lanka’s Upcountry Main Railway Line.

The leak appears during periods of heavy rainfall, raising concerns about the structural integrity of the iconic landmark.

W. M. Sumanasena, a long-time volunteer guard at the site, stated that the issue was recently noticed following intense rains.

The bridge, constructed in 1921 between the Ella and Demodara railway stations, continues to attract large numbers of local and international tourists.

When contacted by media General Manager of Railways Dhammika Jayasundara confirmed that the Department of Railways had not yet received an official complaint.

However, he assured that the matter would be investigated immediately, and necessary action would be taken.

Jayasundara also said the department would examine nearby construction activities and pursue legal action against individuals involved in unauthorized developments that may be impacting the bridge.
