President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the aspirations of war heroes who fought to protect and liberate the country included building a developed, peaceful and just nation, and stressed that the government remains committed to fulfilling that vision.

The President made these remarks while addressing the 17th National War Heroes’ Commemoration Ceremony held in Battaramulla yesterday (19).
President Dissanayake said the armed forces made immense sacrifices to bring relief and security to millions of citizens, adding that their service should be honoured not only through remembrance ceremonies but also by creating a progressive and prosperous country.
He noted that many families still continue to grieve the loss of children, spouses and parents due to the war, and stressed the importance of ensuring that such suffering is never repeated in Sri Lanka.
The President also highlighted the vital role played by the armed forces during national emergencies and disaster situations, describing their contribution to the country as exceptional.
President Dissanayake further stated that the government is working to strengthen Sri Lanka’s international standing while safeguarding the rule of law and judicial independence, adding that such reforms reflect the hopes and sacrifices of war heroes.
He emphasized that Sri Lanka belongs to all communities and rejected attempts to divide the country along ethnic lines, noting that the conflict was fought against separatism and not against any particular community.
The President added that the government’s priority is to prevent the recurrence of conflict and build a democratic society where all citizens are treated equally before the law and given equal opportunities regardless of their background or status.
Concluding his address, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake paid tribute to the armed forces for their dedication and sacrifice, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to peace, unity and national development.
