Virus samples go missing from a lab in Australia

An emergency investigation was conducted after samples of an infectious virus went missing from a laboratory in Queensland (2023).

The State Government has confirmed that three vials of hendra virus, lyssa virus and hanta virus stored at the Public Health Virology Laboratory in Queensland are still missing.

Premier David Crisafulli’s government has now reportedly ordered the Queensland Department of Health to conduct an investigation into the disappearance of virus samples.

It is also said that the laboratory has not been able to confirm whether the missing vials were removed from safe storage and destroyed.

It is stated that there is no evidence that this poses a risk to the society.

In this regard, Dr. John Gerrard said that these viruses have not yet spread to society.
