Vietnam president’s state visit to propel Sri Lanka ties into new phase, says Deputy FM

The upcoming state visit by Tô Lâm, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam and State President, is expected to mark a major turning point in relations with Sri Lanka, paving the way for stronger political trust and broader cooperation, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyễn Mạnh Cường said.

In remarks ahead of the May 7–8 visit, he highlighted its diplomatic importance, noting it will be the highest-level engagement by a Vietnamese leader with Sri Lanka since ties were established in 1970. The visit reflects Việt Nam’s strong regard for Sri Lanka and the wider South Asian region.

Sri Lanka has long been a traditional partner of Vietnam, with both nations sharing a history of mutual support. The visit is expected to further strengthen longstanding ties between leaders and people while reaffirming solidarity during Sri Lanka’s ongoing recovery and development phase.

Beyond symbolism, the visit is set to boost cooperation in key sectors such as trade, investment, maritime affairs, port connectivity, tourism, culture and people-to-people exchanges. Sri Lanka’s strategic location along major Indian Ocean shipping routes and its growing market present significant opportunities for deeper economic engagement.

Both countries have already established cooperation mechanisms, including joint committees and political consultations, while recent agreements in agriculture and education have laid the groundwork for expanded collaboration. Although bilateral trade exceeds US$200 million, both sides see strong potential for growth.

The visit is expected to set ambitious new targets for trade and investment, encourage Vietnamese businesses to explore opportunities in Sri Lanka, and further enhance connectivity, including possible direct air links.

Overall, the visit signals a shared commitment by both nations to elevate their traditional friendship into a forward-looking partnership focused on development, regional cooperation, and mutual prosperity.
