Victoria’s car thieves exposed

A 20-year crackdown on vehicle thefts in Victoria has uncovered links to organized crime groups using advanced technology to steal cars.

Reports reveal that about a fifth of vehicle thefts in the state occur in public places, with thieves purchasing high-tech tools online to bypass security systems.

Victoria Police noted that overall car thefts have declined over the past two decades due to improved vehicle security.

However, in the 12 months leading up to September 2024, 25,773 vehicle thefts were reported, marking an increase of 6,408 cases compared to the previous year.
