Thousands of Victorians could face imprisonment if a temporary moratorium on jailing people for unpaid fines is lifted.
The fines include unpaid parking tickets, toll road debts and other minor infringements that date back more than a decade.
Advocacy groups are urging the Victorian Government to permanently abolish the practice, arguing that people should not be jailed simply because they cannot afford to pay.
Critics say the system disproportionately affects low-income residents and have compared it to the former Robodebt scheme.
The Allan Government says imprisonment remains a last resort and has no current plans to end the moratorium, while encouraging people struggling with fines to seek assistance from Fines Victoria.
