Victoria to introduce ticketless public transport

Train passengers in Victoria will soon be able to tap onto public transport using bank cards, smartphones, or wearable devices.

Public Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams announced a phased rollout across the rail network starting next year.

The upgrade follows a successful trial on four bus routes in Wangaratta and a new 15-year contract with US company Conduent Business Services.

New ticketing systems and readers will be gradually introduced across the network in the coming months.

While Melbourne commuters have long relied on physical cards, Android users have had the option of using an electronic card.
