Victoria’s overall crime rate has shown signs of easing, with new figures revealing a decline in youth offending for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the latest data released by the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA), overall crime in Victoria fell by nearly 2 percent during the 12 months to March 2026, while youth crime dropped by 6 percent compared to the previous year.

The report recorded 22,654 alleged offences involving young people, with the number of youth offenders falling to around 7,000. First-time youth offending also declined significantly, dropping by more than 1,000 cases.

CSA Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said the figures suggest Victoria’s recent crime surge may have peaked, pointing to a 16 percent decline in burglaries as an encouraging sign that overall crime could continue to trend downward.

Despite the improvement in youth crime, adult offending increased by more than 10 percent, driven largely by rises in retail theft, bail breaches, and violations of family violence orders.

The Victorian Government welcomed the decline in youth crime and burglaries, while acknowledging that crime levels remain too high. Police Minister Anthony Carbines credited stronger laws and tougher enforcement measures for the positive trend.

Victoria Police, however, cautioned that crime remains significantly higher than three years ago and highlighted concerns about serious offences involving young offenders, including robberies, carjackings, and home invasions.

Vehicle theft remains a major challenge, with more than 31,000 cars reported stolen during the year—the highest figure recorded in Victoria since 2001–02. Police say advanced key-cloning and key-mimicking technology continue to play a significant role in the increase.

The state recorded a total of 625,426 offences over the reporting period, while retail theft rose by more than 11 percent, reflecting ongoing cost-of-living pressures affecting communities and businesses.

Authorities say further efforts will focus on reducing repeat offending, tackling organised crime, and strengthening community safety as Victoria seeks to maintain the downward trend in overall crime.
