
Venerable Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thera was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Canterbury Christ Church University in recognition of his global spiritual leadership and decades of dedicated community service.
The award was presented on April 1 during a special ceremony held at the Anselm Building chapel of the university, coinciding with the Thera’s official visit to the institution in England.
The honour acknowledges his longstanding contributions to international spiritual leadership, interfaith harmony, education, and community development. He currently serves as the Chief Incumbent of the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo and as the Sanghanayake of the Western Province.
University officials praised his enduring influence, noting that his unique blend of spiritual wisdom and practical leadership has positively impacted thousands of lives worldwide.
Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Nimal Senadheera, also addressed the event, highlighting the global impact of Sri Lankan spiritual traditions.
Expressing gratitude, Venerable Dr. Assaji Thera said the recognition belongs not only to him but also to the communities he has served throughout his life. He emphasized the importance of Buddhist teachings in promoting unity, compassion, and understanding in a divided world.
He further stressed that true peace begins within individuals and that sustainable progress must be grounded in wisdom and moral values. The Thera also highlighted the importance of integrating modern education with spiritual principles.
The visit included participation in interfaith dialogues and a tour of Canterbury Cathedral, reflecting efforts to strengthen cultural and academic ties between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.
The event was attended by academics, diplomats, and community representatives, marking a significant moment that underscores the global importance of peace, compassion, and shared human values.
