Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thero calls on president to reshuffle cabinet

The Chairman of the National Movement for the Protection of the Nation, Venerable Elle Gunawansa Thero, has called for a Cabinet reshuffle, urging the removal of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya from the post of Minister of Education.

The request was made through a memorandum addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

In the memorandum, the Thero claims that the education reforms proposed under the Prime Minister’s leadership are being introduced arbitrarily and pose a serious threat to the country, its people, and the Buddha Sasana under the current government.

He warned that the actions of what he described as an uninformed and indifferent administration could lead to severe consequences for the nation and the public.

The Thero further alleged that the proposed education reforms lack transparency, noting that views have not been sought from Buddhist monks, clergy of other religions, teachers, or education experts.

Accordingly, the memorandum argues that the process followed to introduce the reforms is fundamentally flawed and therefore invalid.

Fulfilling what he described as his historical responsibility as a Buddhist monk, Venerable Elle Gunawansa Thero expressed his expectation that President Dissanayake, as Head of State, would take prompt action to safeguard the country, its people, and the Buddha Sasana from what he termed a looming threat.
