Using whitening cream during pregnancy may harm baby, experts warn

Sri Lankan health officials have raised concerns over a sharp rise in nervous system and kidney diseases linked to harmful skin whitening creams, which can severely damage the skin, Dermatologist Dr. K.D.C. Fernando said.

Speaking at the Health Promotion Bureau, Dr. Fernando explained that the growing popularity of skin whitening products in Sri Lanka is largely driven by social pressures and beauty standards that equate fair skin with beauty and success.

He emphasized that these products, including creams, lotions, serums, and face washes—especially when used by young children and parents—can cause serious health problems.

Dr. Fernando warned that many skin whitening creams contain dangerous chemicals such as hydroquinone and steroids, which may lead to skin irritation, allergic reactions, thinning of the skin, increased sensitivity to sunlight, acne, and steroid-related side effects.

Experts also caution that using skin whitening creams during pregnancy can harm both the mother and the unborn baby due to toxic ingredients like mercury, hydroquinone, and steroids.

The use of such products during pregnancy may result in brain damage, low birth weight, and developmental issues in the baby.

Pregnant women are strongly advised to avoid unregulated skin whitening products and to consult a doctor before using any cosmetic treatments.
