The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced that all direct-hire personnel will be placed on administrative leave globally starting 7th of February 2025 at 11:59 p.m. (EST).
This decision follows extensive layoffs and program closures after a broad freeze on foreign assistance imposed by President Donald Trump.
Exceptions will be made for personnel handling mission-critical functions, core leadership roles, and designated programs. Those required to continue working will be notified by February 6.
For staff stationed outside the US, USAID, in coordination with the Department of State, is preparing a 30-day plan to facilitate their return travel. Non-essential PSC and ISC contracts will be terminated.
Exceptions for extended stays may be granted based on personal or family hardships, including dependents’ school terms, medical needs, pregnancy, or safety concerns. USAID promised further guidance on requesting exceptions.
