US TikTok users switch to Chinese app RedNote amid ban threat

Users fleeing the potential TikTok ban in the US have made RedNote, a Chinese app, the most downloaded on Apple’s US App Store on Monday, dubbing themselves “TikTok refugees.”

RedNote, a popular competitor to TikTok in China, Taiwan, and other Mandarin-speaking areas, has attracted about 300 million monthly users and combines features of TikTok and Instagram.

The app, particularly popular among young urban women, allows users to share lifestyle tips on topics ranging from fashion to dating.

With the US Supreme Court set to rule on a law that could force TikTok to sell its US operations by 19th of January or face a ban, TikTok has vowed not to comply, claiming a ban would violate free speech rights.

RedNote has embraced the influx of new users, with thousands of posts offering guidance on using the app, and many newcomers have expressed gratitude for the platform, despite security concerns.

Despite the appeal of RedNote, concerns about censorship and security risks, particularly related to Chinese government oversight, have persisted, with some users joking about the app’s connection to Chinese spying.
