US praises Sri Lanka’s ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative

The United States has praised President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s new government for its commitment to economic reforms and anti-corruption efforts.

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, welcomed Sri Lanka’s adherence to the IMF program and its progress in restructuring international sovereign bonds.

She emphasized the importance of tackling corruption, fostering growth, and creating a transparent investment climate with partners like AmCham.

Ambassador Chung also commended the launch of the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, which aims to reset the country’s political and economic culture.

She expressed optimism about reforms, such as restructuring inefficient state-owned enterprises and ensuring fair treatment of foreign companies.

Chung highlighted global challenges, including shipping delays due to Houthi attacks, the economic impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and other political issues.

She stressed the need for effective planning to navigate these challenges.

The US continues to support Sri Lanka with loans for SMEs, entrepreneurial training, and technical assistance on renewable energy and tax reform.

As Sri Lanka’s leading export market, the United States remains a key economic partner.
