The United States has banned new imports of foreign-made humanoid and advanced robotic devices, targeting a fast-growing sector dominated by Chinese manufacturers.

The US government says internet-connected robots could create national security risks, including potential data privacy concerns, cybersecurity threats and the possibility of remote control by foreign actors.

China currently leads the global humanoid robot market, with Chinese companies accounting for the majority of worldwide shipments and developing robots for industries, research and consumer applications.

The move is the latest escalation in the technology competition between Washington and Beijing, as both countries race to dominate artificial intelligence, robotics and advanced manufacturing.

China has criticised the ban, accusing the US of using national security concerns to restrict Chinese technology companies and warning it could take further action.
