Unregistered medicines sold near national hospital and nationwide

Sanjaya Mahawatte, Chairman of the “Magen Ratata” organization, revealed today that illegal, unregistered medicines are being sold near the National Hospital in Colombo and across the country.

He claimed these medicines lack registration with the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) and urged the NMRA to take immediate action to stop their distribution.

Mahawatte stated that approximately 50 types of medicines from unlicensed companies are being sold, yet the NMRA has failed to provide information about these suppliers despite multiple requests under the Right to Information Act.

He accused the NMRA of a lack of transparency, raising concerns about potential collusion between state officials and the drug mafia.

Calling the situation alarming, Mahawatte emphasized the need for accountability, vowing to pursue legal action if the requested information remains undisclosed.
