The United National Party (UNP) has expressed concern over the treatment of former State Intelligence Service Director, Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay, and called on authorities to ensure that all actions taken against him are in line with constitutional protections and international human rights obligations.

In a statement, the party noted that Sallay, who is currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital, remains entitled to the legal safeguards guaranteed under Sri Lankan law regardless of the allegations being investigated.

The UNP stressed that the focus should be on ensuring the humane treatment of detainees, warning that any form of torture, cruel treatment, or violation of fundamental rights would be contrary to Article 11 of the Constitution as well as international human rights standards.

The party also called for a parliamentary delegation to be allowed to examine Sallay’s condition, noting that the case has attracted international attention, and pledged to closely monitor developments while urging authorities to uphold the rule of law and due process.
