UNP praises govt on tariff talks, urges transparency on US trade deal

The United National Party (UNP) has welcomed the recent executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump, which further reduces reciprocal tariff rates on Sri Lankan exports.

In a statement, the UNP commended the Sri Lankan Government and its negotiation team for successfully concluding the talks that led to this favorable outcome.

“We commend the Government and the negotiating team for successfully concluding the negotiations,” the party said.

The executive order notes that “some trading partners have agreed to, or are on the verge of agreeing to, meaningful trade and security commitments with the United States.”

Specifically, Section 2(b) of the order states that certain foreign trading partners, including Sri Lanka, will remain subject to additional tariffs until these agreements are finalized and formalized through subsequent orders.

In light of this, the UNP has urged the Government to provide the public with a clear statement detailing the nature and terms of the “meaningful trade and security agreements” referenced in the order. The party emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in trade negotiations that have long-term implications for the country.
