The United National Party (UNP) has declined an invitation from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to participate in its May Day celebrations this year, citing religious observances.
In a letter responding to the invitation, UNP General Secretary Thalatha Atukorale stated that the party had already decided not to take part in political activities on 1 May, as it coincides with Vesak Poya Day.
She explained that the UNP believes it is inappropriate to engage in political events on a Poya Day and has instead chosen to dedicate the day to religious observances.
Atukorale also referred to the practice during the leadership of former Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa, noting that he had emphasised the importance of refraining from political activities on Poya Days.
Accordingly, she confirmed that the UNP will not attend May Day rallies organised by the SJB or any other political party.
However, she added that there remains a wider public expectation for cooperation between the UNP and SJB, and expressed the party’s openness to future collaboration in political activities.
