The United National Party (UNP) has expressed concerns over the Government’s proposed reforms related to Buddhist institutions, including discussions on establishing Dhamma Courts and amending the Vihara–Devalagam Act.

In a statement issued today, the UNP questioned President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent comments supporting action against individuals accused of distorting Buddhism. The party also called for wider consultation with the Maha Sangha and opposition representatives before any reforms are implemented.
The UNP stated that existing constitutional provisions and traditional disciplinary mechanisms within the Buddhist clergy should be followed when addressing misconduct among monks. It further raised concerns about what it described as a lack of consultation in the reform process and urged that any changes be made in accordance with established procedures and long-standing traditions.
Additionally, the party criticised the Government’s approach to several religious matters and urged authorities to engage senior Buddhist clergy before proceeding with proposed legislative changes.
