The United National Party (UNP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) are moving closer to forming a potential electoral alliance, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene stated.
Wijewardene said that discussions between the two parties have reached a productive stage, with both sides engaging in constructive exchanges of views. “Accordingly, there is an opportunity for the two parties to contest together in the upcoming election,” he added.
He noted that the outcome of the ongoing talks with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa would be announced to the public in due course.
According to Wijewardene, both parties have agreed in principle to unite in order to deliver justice to the country and to their respective supporters. He also highlighted that, since the start of discussions, UNP and SJB members at the village level have already begun cooperating, laying the groundwork for a joint electoral effort.
However, he clarified that discussions between Premadasa and the UNP leadership have not yet addressed the allocation of positions within a potential alliance.
