Medical experts say that due to the unnecessary and incorrect use of antibiotics, the development of resistance in the human body against those drugs is harmful to humans.
Dr. Priyantha Athapattu, Deputy Director General (Laboratory Services) of the Ministry of Health’s National Antibiotic Resistance Prevention Center, who joined the Derana “Big Focus” program today, explained as follows.
Antibiotic resistance is…”actually we are talking about resistance to the drugs used against microorganisms. When we talk about microorganisms, there are 4 main types. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites. Here are the drugs developed against these. Microorganisms are called antibiotics, Due to unnecessary use and misuse of these antibiotics, resistance is building up against these drugs. is
Penicillin is the first antibiotic discovered in the world. That was in 1928. This drug has been used since 1944.
From then until 1980, various antibiotics were produced.
But since then, the production of antibiotics has decreased drastically, medical experts say.
The main reason is the high cost.
Between 2017 and 2023, 10 types of antibiotics have been produced.
Dr. Sujatha Pathirage, president of the Association of Microbiology Specialists, says, “Due to the use of these antibiotics, these bacteria have developed resistance to antibiotics. On the one hand, we are losing antibiotics. New ones are not coming. Meanwhile, resistance to antibiotics has increased.
Dr. Priyantha Atapattu points out that doctors also have a responsibility to reduce the misuse of antibiotics.
