The United National Party (UNP) has questioned whether the United States informed the Sri Lanka government before launching an attack on an Iranian vessel within Sri Lanka’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
In a statement, the UNP expressed concern over the government’s continued silence regarding the sinking of the Iranian ship by a U.S. submarine in Sri Lankan waters. The party said the government must clarify whether it had been notified by the United States before the military action was carried out within the country’s EEZ and under the framework of the Colombo Security Conclave.
The UNP warned that such incidents could turn Sri Lanka’s maritime zone into a conflict area, potentially harming the country’s commercial interests. It noted that rising shipping costs and insurance premiums could place additional pressure on the economy and increase the cost of living.
The party also urged the Sri Lankan government to seek assurances from the United States that no further military actions would take place near the country. It further called on authorities to engage with shipping companies and insurance providers to assess the possible economic impact of the incident.
