The United Nations has praised the Sri Lankan government for upholding international humanitarian principles and maintaining neutrality during the rescue of Iranian nationals from the Bushehr vessel.
Marc-André Franche, UN Resident Coordinator and Representative of the Secretary-General in Sri Lanka, welcomed Colombo’s handling of the operation, emphasizing that the government’s actions reflected its commitment to international norms.
“We commend the Sri Lankan Government’s focus on humanitarian assistance grounded in UN and international conventions, respecting its commitment to multilateralism, maintaining neutrality, and demonstrating dedication to peace,” Franche said.
His remarks came in the context of the rescue operation, in which individuals aboard the Iranian ship Bushehr were safely brought to Sri Lanka under humanitarian considerations.
Sri Lankan officials confirmed that the Bushehr had requested permission to enter the country and that facilitating the rescue aligned with the nation’s humanitarian policy.
