UK, European leaders draft Ukraine peace plan for US

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Sunday that European leaders had agreed to create a Ukraine peace plan to present to the United States, a crucial step in securing U.S. security guarantees to deter Russia.

The plan follows a summit in London, which came just two days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s clash with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.

The European leaders expressed strong support for Ukraine and pledged to increase defense spending, aiming to show Trump that Europe can protect itself.

Starmer emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, “It’s time to act, step up, and unite around a new plan for a just and enduring peace.”

The proposed peace plan, though not fully detailed, could involve a one-month ceasefire, focusing on air and sea attacks, with European troops possibly deployed if a more comprehensive agreement is reached.

Zelenskiy reiterated that Ukraine would not cede any territory to Russia, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Meanwhile, European leaders are keen to ensure Ukraine remains central to peace talks, especially after the tensions with Trump, who has raised concerns over continued U.S. support for Ukraine.

The leaders also highlighted the importance of increasing defense spending and bolstering Europe’s defense capabilities to prevent further Russian aggression.

Starmer acknowledged that achieving consensus on defense spending was challenging but necessary to secure U.S. backing for any peacekeeping efforts.

He also emphasized that Europe must carry the primary responsibility for peace efforts, with U.S. support crucial for success.
