Udayanga Weeratunga arrested

Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga, has been arrested in connection with ongoing investigations into alleged financial irregularities.

Weeratunga, who has been a controversial figure in Sri Lanka, is accused of involvement in a high-profile corruption case linked to the purchase of MiG fighter jets during his tenure as ambassador.

Authorities confirmed that his arrest followed new evidence unearthed during the investigation, which has been ongoing for several years. The Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) is handling the case, which involves allegations of misappropriation of public funds and financial malpractice.

Weeratunga had previously been named a suspect in the case and was subjected to an international warrant before returning to Sri Lanka voluntarily. He has consistently denied the allegations, claiming the accusations are politically motivated.

The arrest marks a significant development in Sri Lanka’s efforts to tackle corruption and hold public officials accountable. Weeratunga is expected to be produced before court, where further legal proceedings will take place.
