U.S. Embassy issues alert over cyclonic storm ‘Ditwah’

The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka has issued a weather alert warning U.S. citizens of potential risks from Cyclonic Storm “Ditwah,” which is currently located about 50 km south of Trincomalee.

The embassy has advised U.S. government personnel in Sri Lanka to exercise caution, avoid non-essential travel, and monitor local weather updates. It also urged the public to follow instructions from the Department of Meteorology and local authorities, and to ensure they have adequate emergency supplies prepared.

Despite the severe weather, the U.S. Embassy in Colombo remains open. Any changes to operations or consular services will be communicated if necessary.

For assistance, the embassy can be reached at +94-11-249-8500 or ColomboACS@state.gov. Travelers are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time alerts.

According to the advisory issued on November 28, the storm is moving in a north-northwestward direction and is expected to bring widespread heavy rainfall and strong winds across the island.

Provinces forecast to receive very heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm include Northern, North-Central, Central, North-Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Western. Rainfall above 150 mm is expected in Trincomalee, Badulla, Galle, and Matara, while many other areas may receive over 75 mm.
