Two women lost their lives in a tragic accident after stopping to help an injured kangaroo on Melbourne’s Hume Freeway in Craigieburn.
The crash occurred just after 7.30 p.m. yesterday. A 30-year-old woman from Beveridge died at the scene, while another 30-year-old woman from Thomastown later died in hospital.
Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing Glenn Weir said the women had struck the kangaroo with their car and stopped to assist it when another vehicle, travelling in the same direction, swerved to avoid their car but struck the two women at high speed.
Weir acknowledged the women’s intentions but warned of the dangers of being on the road at night, particularly in wet conditions. He also expressed sympathy for the driver involved and other motorists who witnessed the incident.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Investigations into the crash are ongoing, and witnesses have been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
Victoria Police reported that 205 people have died on the state’s roads so far this year — 12 more than the same period last year. In the past four days alone, nine people have been killed, including three pedestrians, three motorcyclists, and three motorists.
