Two police officers have been killed and another injured in a shooting at a rural property in Porepunkah, north-east Victoria, Australia.
Victoria Police confirmed they were executing a warrant for historical sex offences at the property, about 300 kilometres from Melbourne, when the gunfire broke out. Authorities believe the shooter identifies as a “sovereign citizen” – a group that rejects government authority and relies on pseudo-legal arguments with no basis in law.
The gunman remains at large, prompting a major police operation involving tactical vehicles, helicopters, and dozens of officers. Ambulance Victoria reported that the injured officer is in stable condition after being taken to hospital.
The incident has forced Porepunkah Primary School into lockdown, while residents have been urged to remain indoors, lock their vehicles, and avoid the area due to the ongoing risk. Locals reported seeing heavy police movement and hearing helicopters overhead, with one resident describing the situation as “pretty intense.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed “grave concern” for the officers, praising the risks taken daily by police in protecting communities. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan and Opposition Leader Brad Battin also paid tribute to the fallen officers, acknowledging their bravery and urging the public to follow police instructions.
The Police Association of Victoria has dispatched critical incident support teams to assist officers, their families, and colleagues. The Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) also expressed solidarity, noting that the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers police officers face every day in safeguarding the community.
Porepunkah, a town of just over 1,000 residents, remains under heavy police presence as the situation continues to unfold.
