Two Leptospirosis deaths reported in Sri Lanka in first four days of 2025

In the first four days of 2025, Sri Lanka has reported two deaths from Leptospirosis, with one fatality each from Jaffna and Batticaloa districts.

Thushani Dabrera, an Epidemiologist at the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiology Unit, disclosed that Jaffna District alone has seen a total of 9 Leptospirosis deaths since the start of the year.

The nationwide toll of Leptospirosis deaths in 2024 stood at 203, highlighting the ongoing risk posed by the disease.

Authorities are urging increased awareness and preventative measures to curb the spread of Leptospirosis in affected areas.

Jaffna and Batticaloa, which have been identified as high-risk regions, are closely monitored by health officials.

Health experts emphasize the importance of proper sanitation and avoiding exposure to contaminated water sources to reduce the risk of infection.
