
Two individuals have been arrested for attempting to smuggle 4 kilograms and 454 grams of gold into Sri Lanka in the seas off Arichchal, Kalpitiya, the Navy announced yesterday .
Based on intelligence received by the Northwestern Naval Command, SLNS Vijaya conducted a search operation and intercepted a suspicious dinghy carrying two men. Upon inspection, officers discovered the gold disguised as 13 fishing net weight sinkers.
The suspects, residents of Wendesiwatta and Anawasala in Kalpitiya, were taken into custody along with the seized gold and the dinghy.
The arrested duo and the confiscated items were later handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Katunayake for further investigations and legal action.
