Tuberculosis: essential safety facts

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains a serious global health concern. It spreads through airborne bacteria from an infected person but only develops into active disease when the immune system is weakened.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in ten infected individuals will develop TB. Risk factors include malnutrition, excessive alcohol use, overexertion, and poor ventilation.

Common Symptoms of TB:

  • Persistent cough (3-4 weeks or more)
  • Low-grade fever and night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue and shortness of breath
  • Chest pain and coughing up blood
  • Loss of appetite

Health experts stress that TB is fully curable with proper diagnosis and treatment, available in district hospitals nationwide.

Preventive Measures:

  1. Ensure good ventilation and sunlight exposure.
  2. Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
  3. Cover the mouth when coughing or sneezing.
  4. Do not spit in public places.

A TB awareness program was recently held in front of the old Bogambara Prison in Kandy, led by the Central Province Health Department and Kandy National Hospital.

Dr. Dushyantha Medagedara from Kandy National Hospital emphasized TB’s global impact, noting that around 2 million people die from it annually, with 8 to 10 million new infections reported each year. He highlighted the importance of early detection and awareness in reducing mortality and preventing further spread.
